We are the City of Melbourne, a city of possibility and a place to be bold and inspirational.

We are rapidly transforming to meet the evolving challenges faced by a global city. With a vision to be a leading organisation for a leading capital city, our mission is to create positive impact for our community. Each day, we work with passion and purpose to achieve better outcomes for our city and its communities.

How this position will make the difference to the City of Melbourne

The City of Melbourne has a new Community Development Branch that is responsible for embedding community development principles and practice across the organisation. Our vision is to enable a just, inclusive and sustainable society where communities are empowered to meaningfully engage, participate and shape their own city. We are taking a place-based approach to how we understand and work with and for our communities, and look to create more value for community through our everyday work as we drive an inclusive and sustainable long-term recovery from Covid-19.

The purpose of the Neighbourhood Team is to drive more meaningful connection with our local communities, at a suburb or neighbourhood level, so that shared priorities can be achieved. We recognise that our city is a dynamic municipality made up of a broad set of neighbourhoods, each with its own unique characteristics and needs – from densely populated urban environments, such as the CBD; to more residential areas, such as Kensington, Carlton and South Yarra. Applying a neighbourhood approach will strengthen how we understand and work with different communities across our municipality.

Neighbourhood Partners lead this work by building positive relationships with a diverse range of community members to understand place-based strengths, priorities and needs. They connect different parts of the community to each other and support community-led ideas. They also bring understanding of each neighbourhood into the organisation and use these insights to influence the direction of City of Melbourne work and projects.
