How this position will make the difference to the City of Melbourne

The City of Melbourne has a new Community Development Branch that is responsible for embedding community development principles and practice across the organisation. Our vision is to enable a just, inclusive and sustainable society where communities are empowered to meaningfully engage, participate and shape their own city. We are taking a place-based approach to how we understand and work with and for our communities, and look to create more value for community through our everyday work as we drive an inclusive and sustainable long-term recovery from Covid-19.

The Community Engagement and Impact Team is responsible for enabling the City of Melbourne to create more value for community through our everyday work. To do this the team will provide advice and support to project teams across the organisation to deliver more value through building in outcomes related to priority areas such as diversity and inclusion, deeper engagement with community, sustainability, increased community participation and building community capacity.

The Community Engagement and Impact Lead is a leadership role within the team and will have management responsibility for three staff. Key priorities for the role include:

Coaching and developing a high-performing team that supports the work of the Community Development Branch and is valued across the organisation for its strong contribution and positive ways of working.
Working closely with the Manager, Community Engagement and Impact to support the development of a service model for the team and an assessment and measurement framework to quantify the social value City of Melbourne projects generate for the community.
Building strong and productive relationships with key areas of City of Melbourne and project teams to increase opportunities for creating more value for communities in our everyday work.

Selection criteria for this position 

Demonstrated experience in public sector, community development, community engagement, social value creation or other similar discipline.
Leadership: Experience leading a team and building a positive culture to deliver on strategic priorities.
Strategic skills: Ability to think strategically, critically and creatively; provide high quality business partnering support to help the organisation deliver on strategic priorities and business needs.
Stakeholder and relationship management: Strong communication and interpersonal skills; ability to challenge and influence others; working with internal stakeholders to problem solve providing pragmatic, best practise solutions to issues.
Project management skills: High level project management experience in complex and developing environments, with an active commitment to collaborative thinking and practice and a desire to work in a dynamic and diverse environment to create great community outcomes.
