The Stakeholder Engagement, Intergovernmental Strategy and Inclusion Unit plays a critical role in building the Department of Justice and Community Safety (DJCS) capacity to engage with stakeholders and drive an inclusion agenda. The Stakeholder Engagement, Intergovernmental Strategy and Inclusion Unit plays a critical role in building the DJCS capacity to engage with stakeholders and drive an inclusion agenda. The Unit also works to ensure that inclusion and intersectionality are at the heart of the justice reform agenda.

Aboriginal Justice Group

The Aboriginal Justice group has been established to help DJCS realise a clear and unifying vision of a justice and community safety system that works together to build a safer, fairer and stronger Victoria.

The Aboriginal Justice group drives change and coordinates efforts across the department to improve outcomes for Aboriginal Victorians, with a strong emphasis on supporting Aboriginal self-determination and working in partnership with Victorian Aboriginal communities, stakeholders and individuals.

About the role

As the Principal Engagement Adviser – Aboriginal Communities, you will play a lead role in building departmental capability in working with and engaging with Aboriginal communities in the design and implementation of DJCS reforms, policies and programs. You will be a part of the Stakeholder Engagement, Intergovernmental Strategy and Inclusion Unit within Service Delivery Reform Coordination and Workplace Safety on an ongoing basis.

You will facilitate direct engagement with communities to ensure the views and experiences of Aboriginal Victorians shape the development of DJCS reforms and services. This role will require facilitating direct engagement with communities to ensure the views and experiences of Aboriginal Victorians shape the development of DJCS reforms and services.

You will be supported by the expertise of the Aboriginal Justice Group, acting as a first point of contact for queries to ensure that the department is appropriately considering and engaging with Aboriginal Communities in all of its policy, project and service delivery design.

This is an Aboriginal Identified Position; Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people are strongly encouraged to apply.

About you

You will be community and client focused with sound knowledge and experience of Aboriginal communities in Victoria.

You will have:

Strong knowledge of, and demonstrated experience, working with Aboriginal communities and advisory groups, including sophisticated and culturally aware stakeholder engagement.
Demonstrated ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with members of Aboriginal Communities.
Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of Victorian Aboriginal communities, both socially and culturally and the issues impacting on them.
Strong analytical, conceptual and problem-solving skills with the ability to develop policy and project advice drawing on best practice to inform and shape the development of government policy and positions.
Highly developed interpersonal and negotiation skills, with an ability to effectively negotiate and resolve project scope, design and delivery issues with a diverse range of internal and external stakeholders.
